TRANSFORMERS PRIME, EPISODE 63: "PERSUASION"

...

Yeah, I don't have a whole lot of stuff to say about "Persuasion." I mean, most of this is just build up and padding until we get to Ratchet's answer and you know they were going to spend the entire episode working its way up to The Decision.

I mean, stuff happens if anyone's worried: Predaking's getting angrier at the Autobots. There's a small moment where Fowler tells Jack he's military material. Raf finally gets a decent spotlight when he constructs a device to locate Ratchet. His pale imitation of the medibot is a bit too awkward for my taste and the actor can't seem to make him sound genuinely choked up, but Raf's lament over Ratchet's disappearance is believable. They had enough interaction (topped with Raf always staying in base while the olda' kids perform the action portion amongst the three) that I can buy his remorse. Ummm, what else? Arcee praises Smokescreen again despite him admitting he's not Mr. Hot Shot because the show can't go one damn minute without praising Wonder Boy here. Bulkhead talks about Wheeljack and the Wreckers not always being alone and blah blah blah God, stop repeating stuff we know, guys. Starscream and the Cons pull another fail card when the former destroys what he presumes is the Autobot headquarters without even thinking of blowing up the rest of the base because of blind assumption that he got it right the first time. Guess what, he didn't and the tension that derived from this moment just vaporized. Way to be, Starscream. They're tiny increments that move their character and plot, but we all know it's all just padding for the main event.

Naturally, Megatron and Ratchet's interaction is the main draw. Nevermind that the whole thing looks like Megatron is seducing Ratchet like that creepy old dude holding candy from his shady-ass van, their interaction is what I expected, but intriguing nonetheless. Specifically, I actually like that Megatron decides he's not going to sugarcoat anything in front of the medic. Yes, he wants Cybertron; yes, the war will continue; and yes, you will likely die after you are of use, Ratchet. He's being totally honest about his vicious nature because I think he knows belittling Ratchet won't curry any favors and only complicate things. Plus, well, Ratchet isn't an idiot; he knows Megatron is a jerkass. Instead he appeals to the same concerns Ratchet's carried for years: resurrect Cybertron. Come on, you know you want to. Ratchet resists, but ultimately caves in when he sees the fancy Omega Lock the Cons have built. Someone's got a science boner. They're good scenes. I just wish I could say more, but…meh.

BONUS OBSERVATION

BECAUSE ONCE AGAIN, THE DAMN SHOW HAS TO REMIND YOU: Not two minutes in and we get a close up of Optimus' Autobot logo because like Predaking, we need a constant reminder that he's an Autobot.

WHY AM I EVEN QUESTIONING THIS? I want to know where Predaking stores all his dragon form in when he transforms? He's barely over a foot taller than Megatron, yet in dragon form, he is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay larger in comparison that there is no way he can cram all that extra space inside of him. I don't know why I am questioning this; it's not like Transformers hasn't done this before! I think I'm just padding this review out because there's barely anything to talk about.

A HAND INDEED: It goes by too quick to see, but Optimus places a comforting hand on Bumblebee. That's pretty cute, though I think it'd have made sense to do it with Arcee instead. She's the one who hesitantly looked on when Optimus volunteered to fight Predaking last episode.

RAF'S GOT SKILLS? So he can instantly understand Bumblebee and can hack the shit out of Cybertronian tech  since the pilot episodes, but they draw the line on him possessing the ability to read Cybertronian right off the bat. I don't actually have a problem with this; it's just hard to stomach when he seem to master everything else the Cybertronians managed to throw his way. Seriously, is he an alien?

So even when Smokescreen himself admits to not being Primus' gift to Cybertronians, the show has to remind him that he, in fact, is? XD

Also As cool as the moment is where Megatron doesn't make any pretenses about his maliciousness, doesn't it kinda contradict a moment early in the episode where he promised Ratchet that no harm would come to the Autobots if he complied?

Finally, I was convinced early on in the series that Raf was adopted and was, in fact, a techno-organic like Sari, and that it would be a big reveal later on down the line. For some reason, the part in that one episode where he admitted that he doesn't know how he can understand Bumblebee strengthened this suspicion.
