PREVIOUS SEASON THREE REVIEWS

54. Big Game
55. Too Many Kades
56. Phantom of the Sea
As always, SPOILERS!
”We left it behind, the one mission we did not finish. Some days it’s hard to call myself a Rescue Bot.”
When I saw the Energon Eater, my initial thoughts were, “Ahh, maybe they created a giant space eel based on sparkeaters because the latter are terrifying abominations of robotic nightmares.” In a way, Double E can be seen as that, but Rescue Bots have a tendency to introduce a level of horror in spite of its preschool-targeted tone. With “Unfinished Business”, the episode leaves you with the idea that the crew the Rescue Bots couldn’t save prior to arriving on Earth might have been the unfortunate victims of Double E. Sure, the episode also feigns hope that they’re alive, but it’s shrouded in suspicion and the episode takes a decidedly somber, nightmarish tone.
This is an excellent Chase episode. Out of the four, he’s dutiful in a way that fits his strict, to-the-point lifestyle. Once Heatwave tells Cody the story of the Energon Eater, it forces Chase to confess the guilt he felt for leaving them behind. In spite of the passage of time, Chase seeks out the ship and confronts his demons. It’s simplicity leaves plenty of room to deliver a feeling of melancholy.
There’s also a certain build up of anticipation thinking for a second that perhaps you might see other Cybertronians, but that would likely require animating new character models for what can only be assumed to be a one-episode deal. They worked around it though, but it gave it a sense of something larger in the Rescue Bots world beyond Griffin Rock. It works as a one-episode kind of thing; expanding the universe of Rescue Bots wouldn’t work. Their lives IS Griffin Rock. ‘Sides, the show is part of a bigger continuity anyway. But it sure is nice to see their pre-Earth mode again, too.
My only gripe is the B-Plot with Heatwave and Blades. They’re left to fill in Chase and Boulder’s shoes while they’re off. While we get a couple of moments of the two trying to handle the Burns family and the respective activities Chase and Boulder did prior, it’s relegated to a five minute spot and never built upon and I think this is a plot that could have been put to better use.
Beyond that, “Unfinished Business” serves as a nice companion piece alongside “Phantom of the Sea” as a depressing, yet ultimately hopeful look on second chances.
And isn’t Blades like extra adorable cutie-patootie in this episode?! He’s such a ham!
AND A HALF OUT OF FIVE STARS
POWER TO THE RESCUE: I don’t really get why Heatwave spouted this. Why couldn’t they stick with “Roll to the Rescue?” Did they not have wheeled vehicles back in Cybertron? I ask because Blades is confirmed to at least have a land alt mode before he became a chopper.
IT WAS ANOTHER TUESDAY FOR MRS. NEEDLELANDER; SHE TOOK A LAMP: Mrs. Needlelander might be the biggest badass of the entire show. River flooding? Don’t care, she’s going to calmly and silently go in the house and get a damn lamp. Massive tidal wave heading in her direction? Whatever, it’s all a damn Tuesday for her. This lady just stood in a burning building until she was rescued, she doesn’t give a crap because this is just another day for her. I bet you dollars to donuts, Mrs. Needlelander has lead a very full life.
ROBO-LOVE: That girl Heatwave saved from the river will forever have her life changed because she now realizes robots are hot.
”WE HAVE FAILED OUR FIRST MISSION ON EARTH:” This line confuses me because why is Chase stating this? In season three? They already had a first mission on Earth…back in episode one! Is this a scripting error or am I missing something?
COP VS. POLICE: This statement also confused me when Charlie declared they’re “police”, not “cops.” I know the latter is just another way of saying "police", but I assumed they meant the same thing? So I did some research to figure out if there was a hidden meaning. Well, kinda? Cops were a derogatory term back in the days. Nowadays, it’s mostly an informal version of “police.” So I guess Charlie’s comment is more alone the lines of how he views himself and his job—with great respect.
PICTURES OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN: GOD BLADES YOU. So is that Energon Eater in Optimus’ base back in Nevada, Jasper or some other government base elsewhere? Because if it’s the first, did it get destroyed when Megatron and his cronies blew up the damn place in Prime?
BEST LINE: ”Ooh! I’ve seen vampires on TV. Energon Eaters are way more scary; they don’t brood handsomely.”
Blades, living on Earth long enough to judge human standards of beauty.
RUNNER-UP:
”If you are in need of help, please respond. I am not selling anything.”
Okay then, Chase. Good to know.
WORST LINE: ”Eat our stardust!”
Insulting others do not become you, Boulder. Best stick to construction.

I think the parsing for that line about failing the first mission on earth is that it's the first mission there that they failed. Even though it really wasn't a fail. Clearly reflective of Chase's locus of responsibility issues.
