RESCUE BOTS, EPISODE 38: SPACE BOTS
(Houston, I refuse to make a Houston reference.)

”[Maybe] But nothing beats rolling to the rescue on good old terrafirma.”
”Earth?”
”Home.”

Dear GOD, this is one of those “It Just Keeps Getting Worse” episodes. “Space Bots” certainly doesn’t lack from ideas on how much shit they wanted to put Doc and Graham through. While it isn’t necessarily heart-pounding (because it gives just enough breathing space both for the characters and the audiences), their conditions are legitimate and remain possibly one of the riskier rescues the Rescue Bots had to do. I mean, being stranded in space for eternity has got to be one of the suckiest ways to die. But add malfunctions to the mix (you can get knocked off the beam’s path!? Oh God!) and a broken window outside of Earth’s atmosphere in the course of a day is enough for a psychologist visit for the rest of your life. I mean, Doc probably has a clone somewhere who’ll carry his evil plans though. But Graham? Poor guy, he’s already a nervous wreck before he got on board and if I somehow ended in his shoes, I’d feel the same (actually worse; at least the guy has experience risking his life as a first responder.) Again, this is perfectly contrasted with Cody who’s much more excited over the prospect of space travel because an average ten-year-old’s mind is Space Sphere’s level of excitement.

How the hell are they going to explain this to NASA?

Visually, the space elevator is probably one of the neatest concepts I’ve seen: literally riding up and down a laser to space. I’m also glad they took the effort to make space pretty by splashing nebula to and fro instead of standard blackness (even if that would probably be more accurate.) Final Frontier never looked lovelier.

Oh hey, Baranova, we haven’t seen her in a while. Especially noteworthy is that her Asgard project consistently composes of flora surviving in a hostile environment much like what Midgard did. Naturally, she heads the whole project. Good to see her in any case. Frankie’s concern for her father throughout the episode is also a nice heart moment. EDIT: My friend pointed this out and I cannot believe I missed this: Her original project Midgard took place on Earth (underwater, specifically), but anyone with basic Norse myth knows "Midgard" means "Earth." Asgard meanwhile is the home of the Gods. So naturally, the Asgard shoots to the "heavenly skies" AKA space.

In a bit of world-building, we learn the Rescue Bots have been trained for space rescue, but never got the opportunity to try it out in a real situation. And Blades flunk that part of the test. ;) After the first episode and numerous cameos in the series' theme song, the Rescue Bots finally have a use for their ol’ spaceship and it is glorious to see that thing up and running. The rescue feels more poignant and the resolution Heatwave makes at the end all the more heartfelt.

BONUS OBSERVATIONS

SPACE LOGOS: The logos on the astronaut suit is a griffin.

BEAR HUG: Kade gives one to Graham after his little brother returns home safely. It’s a short, but sweet encounter between the two and really emphasizes a lot of Kade’s growth.

MR. BADASS ALERT: While Boulder and Chase settles for foaming the space rocks hurtling their way and Blades plays a game of baseball; Heatwave’s solution is to fucking punch that thing into the water. Holy SHIT. Are you sure we should be following Optimus Prime?

FANCY BUNKER: The secret entrance to the Rescue Bot spaceship is DAMN fancy for first responder budgets. They must seriously rule the island with their iron fists to even have this kind of money. “YOU WILL GIVE US ALL YOUR TAX SO WE CAN KEEP RESCUING YOU. THY COMMAND POLICE KING CHARLIE BURNS.”

FLIGHT OR DIE, I MEAN NAVIGATE: Notice Heatwave put Blades on navigation instead of piloting despite his vehicle mode. Now remember prior to being a helicopter, Blades did NOT have a flying alt mode. ;)

OH HI CODY: I love that neither Graham nor Doc said or reacted horribly when they spotted Cody in space. Routine at this point, so why even bother?

BEST LINE:

BLADES: ”Are you sure this is going to work?”
Dani: *confidently* Of course not.

These two are the best partners ever.

WORST LINE: ”You have just been foamed.”
Not one of your best, Chase.

I'm pretty sure we shouldn't be following the suicidal fortune cookie addict.
