WEBSiTE UPDATE: Happy Birthday, mom!

Now that we got that sappy event out of the way..."One Of A Kind's" summary/review has been revised and filled with screen caps. All the links to the reviews are connected. Finally, I have a summary/review of the obscure Danny Phantom picture book: "Stage Fright". Enjoy.

Bolt [Not a shorten version of the name "Thunderbolt" from 101 Dalmatians]

Bolt is a miracle. Sort of. It's not a Disney film I consider recommending if I was to make a Top Ten list, but it's a decent, passable film that manages to give credibility of its contends by giving it as much heart as it does story.

Bolt is a super-energized dog designed to fight evil and protect his person Penny whom he loves to his fullest (platonic). 'Course, that's only severe delusions of grandeur; he's only an actor. The crew has worked hard to make sure Bolt isn't aware he is in a set to create a more realistic, cost-effective situation (which makes little sense; you spend all that effort keeping a small dog from guess working he's in a film is mostly likely going to cost more!), but complication arises when a cliffhanger plot to gain the 18-35 year demographic (also doesn't make sense; what series aimed for adults stars a tweenage girl and her dog?) accidentally sends Bolt from his Hollywood home to New York City. Thinking Penny is still in trouble, he teams up with the sarcastic Mittens the Cat and the rabid fanboy Rhino the Hamster.

What the movie does is essentially trigger a road trip where the three animals journey to Hollywood to "rescue" Penny. The trio interact brilliantly with each other and all have their own little stories that unwrap (and gets solved - this is a Disney film after all) over the course of their trip. What's more surprisingly is the potential breakout character Rhino doesn't muck up half the screen with his antics; the directors were very wise to keep him in scenes where he is needed, not unnecessary wanted. And on a smaller note, it's so reliving to see a girl owning a dog for once. Not to mention the Cats vs. Dogs angled is played here, but with much happier outcomes: Mittens and Bolt's chemistry is wonderful.

The pacing is brilliant and at times, the jokes can put a smile on your face though there aren't a lot of scenes to make you roar with laughter. About the only real unnecessary scenarios are anything to do with the pigeons who yak and yak far more then needed.

The movie for the most part looks good to see. Most of the better effects are at the very beginning and very end when all the hi-tech explosions and TV sound effects take in full force. Otherwise, don't expect anything too special.

It's a good film. Possibly the best of the 2000's era Disney film (ignoring my fan squeals for Atlantis: The Lost Empire) right behind Lilo and Stitch. If anything, it makes me hopeful for this year's The Princess and the Frog.

Watchemen [Who watches them? I do]
I only became a fan of Watchmen just last year when I stumbled upon the comic in my local bookstore. What I got were hours of addiction; the comic lived to the expectations people have placed for 20+ years. It's a brilliant deconstruction of superheroes, to show not only are they humans, but the toll of fighting justice is a heavy one to bear, one that can leave you just as psychotic as you are weary. The comic was so damn good that hearing about the upcoming movie, I listened and hope it'd do the comic justice.

Well, it didn't. But don't worry, the movie is still good. It follows the book very close while removing any scenes that wouldn't fit into the movie. And what they don't fit, they don't elaborate on, so the plot doesn't become convuluted or plot hole-ish. With it comes excellent pacing and scenes that looked straight out of the comic itself.

Unfortunately because of its close link to the comic, the movie loses a little of its cinema integrity and essentially becomes a moving comic book. We get from a moving plot that stops midway because the director adhere to the comic's structure and put in a side story of Dr. Manhattan's origin for example. Jarring on film, not so in the graphic novel. Also, the actress who plays Silk Spectra II needs better acting lessons; half of her scenes are so forced. Thankfully both Dr. Manhattan and fan favorite Rorschach are absolutely brilliant (though the movie made him more sympathetic, which is missing Alan Moore's point).

The ending itself is a source of vast controversy. The results of the comic differs from the movie and the fur has flied. My view? I liked the movie. The book is still better and gets the message across, but the movie does essentially the same with as much impact. And even if the controversial change differed, the results might not matter if the possible downer ending is any indication.

It's still a good, faithful movie. So shut up and enjoy it.

Good to see you liked Watchmen. It seems anytime I try to talk to someone in real life about it, the reply ends up as something along the lines of "LOL is that the movie with the naked blue guy?" I want to slaughter teenagers sometimes.
